El Museo Memorial de la Resistencia Dominicana recordó la lucha que libró Luis Arístides García-Mella (Tidito), durante la dictadura trujillista, por su oposición al régimen, hecho por el que fue encarcelado en varias ocasiones, sufriendo constantes maltratos y vejaciones.

Durante un acto, al que asistieron familiares y allegados García-Mella, entre ellos su hija Cecilia García, se reconoció la gallardía que tuvo, para junto a su familia formar parte, como otros tantos dominicanos, de las luchas por salir de la época de terror que vivió República Dominicana durante más de 30 años.

“Ese es el objetivo, el rescatar y llevar a los estudiantes en una forma más natural y cercana a personas que en un momento dado decidieron y escogieron cosas que lo pusieron en peligro, que sufrieron de alguna forma la represión de la dictadura, muchos perdieron sus vidas, porque escogieron el camino de la dignidad”, sostuvo la directora-fundadora del Museo Memorial, Luisa De Peña Díaz, al pronunciar las palabras del acto donde se le dedicó la Pieza del Mes a García-Mella. Recordó que el programa busca, además, acercar a las familias al museo, para que se sientan parte de la institución, teniendo como principal misión educar en derechos humanos sobre la base de la experiencia vivida. Dijo que las piezas que se exhiben en el lobby de la institución y que corresponden a víctimas de la dictadura se convierten en un vínculo material, algo que el museo valora con gran dimensión.

De su lado, la actriz y cantante Cecilia García, hija de García-Mella, al hablar y agradecer en nombre de la familia, destacó el trabajo que desarrolla la institución, calificándolo como muy necesario para las nuevas generaciones. “Es un trabajo precioso y muy necesario, sobre todo cuando la historia que está contada deja fuera esas lagunas y que la gente venga aquí para encontrar la verdad”, sostuvo García, tras recordar a su padre como un hombre jovial, con mucho talento, un gran imitador de voces que tocaba piano y guitarra.

El acto se desarrolló entre anécdotas y episodios que vivió la familia durante la dictadura, incluyendo los momentos de encierro y maltratos de su padre. Recordó que a su padre lo nombraron como síndico de San Cristóbal, pero que lejos de ser un premio fue un caramelo envenenado, debido a que ya Trujillo sabía que era opositor al régimen, por lo que fue una artimaña para someterlo a constantes maltratos desde la posición que ocupaba.

Luis Arístides García-Mella García (Tidito) nació en Santo Domingo el 8 de diciembre de 1908, hijo del matrimonio formado por el destacado profesor Arístides García Mella y María García De la Concha. Tuvo tres hermanos: Margarita, José Eduardo y Celeste Aurora. Se sumó, junto a un cuñado, a una de las conspiraciones para enjuiciar a Trujillo, complot que fue develado, por lo que fue apresado y enviado a la cárcel de Nigua, un centro de torturas y trabajos forzados que usaba la tiranía para confinar a los presos políticos.

Tiempo después fue puesto en libertad, pero quedó marcado como opositor, por lo que fue encarcelado nuevamente hasta que recibió un indulto en un momento en que Trujillo quería atraer la juventud, sin embargo, le negaron la entrada a la Universidad para continuar sus estudios.

A raíz del ajusticiamiento, el 30 de mayo de 1961, el régimen desató una persecución implacable contra todos sus opositores. Por una serie de hechos fortuitos, Luis Arístides se vio a salvo de la embestida sangrienta de Ramfis Trujillo, hasta que cinco meses después cayó la dictadura.

Luis Arístides falleció en Santo Domingo el 17 de mayo de 1998 y es recordado por su apego a la libertad y la justicia, así como por su jovialidad y sus incursiones en la música, pues tocaba varios instrumentos, y junto a su esposa, que también cantaba, hacía unos dúos inolvidables para sus familiares y amistades.
